Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned after losing his Senate majority, plunging the country into political uncertainty just as it s battling the pandemic and a recession.
Weakened by the defection of a junior partner, Conte offered his resignation Tuesday to President Sergio Mattarella, according to a statement from the president s office. The head of state, who oversees attempts to forge new governments, will hold a round of talks with party leaders before he nominates someone to forge a fresh coalition, the statement said.

Genoa [Italy], January 26 (ANI/Sputnik): Italian Prime MinisterGiuseppe Conte has officially stepped down in order to try to form a government with wider support, and the consultations with the parties with a view to finding a new parliamentary majority will start on Wednesday afternoon, according to the official statement from the presidential palace. President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella received this morning the President of the Council of Ministers Giuseppe Conte, who handed in the resignation of the government that he presides. The president of the republic has decided to invite the government to remain in charge to handle the current affairs. The consultations [with the parties] will start in the afternoon of tomorrow, Wednesday, January 27, Ugo Zampetti, secretary of the presidency of the republic, said in a press statement. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte submitted his resignation Tuesday to President Sergio Mattarella, in a bid to form a new, stronger government.
Mattarella accepted the resignation and reserves the right to decide (what to do next) and invited the government to stay in office in a caretaker capacity , an Italian presidency statement said.
