As political dialogue stumbles in Libya, Turkey and Italy are trying to exploit the North African country’s misfortunes to have a new executive authority appointed under its ally, the current President Fayez al-Sarraj.
This brings back to the surface talk of a scenario that had been previously floated whereby Sarraj would remain head of the presidency council, while the army, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, would appoint a prime minister of its choice.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio had transferred a proposal from Sarraj to Haftar stipulating that Sarraj would remain head of the presidency council in exchange for appointing a prime minister from the eastern region.

European leaders have agreed to maintain a strong relationship with the UK following the post-Brexit trade deal which was struck on Christmas Eve.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the deal will benefit European businesses and citizens.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said, “today we get…a trade deal that I think protects Ireland in the circumstances as well as we could have possibly hoped.”
However, UK Opposition Leader Keir Starmer criticised the agreement saying it was not the deal the government had promised.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Italy has become one of the hardest hit European countries, as its death toll recently surpassed 70,000 and its case count nears 2 million. Tracking by Worldometer notes Italy ranks fourth in case count when compared against other European countries.
A total of 500 relatives of individuals who died of COVID-19 in Italy presented a lawsuit on Wednesday against regional and national authorities who they claim are liable for criminal negligence due to their handling of the pandemic.
