More Fun Than Fun: The Joys and Burdens of Our Heroes 12/05/2021
Among the books I read as a teenager, two completely changed my life. One was
The Double Helix by Nobel laureate James D. Watson. This book was inspiring at many levels and instantly got me addicted to molecular biology. The other was
King Solomon’s Ring by Konrad Lorenz, soon to be a Nobel laureate. The study of animal behaviour so charmingly and unforgettably described by Lorenz kindled in me an eternal love for the subject.
The circumstances in which I read these two books are etched in my mind and may have partly contributed to my enthusiasm for them and their subjects.

A section of scientists in the country, on Thursday, impressed upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the need to make public the Covid-19 data that is being gathered by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) since last year. They said a deep dive into this data by experts is critically important to ascertain the medical needs of the country in fighting the pandemic.
In an open appeal to Modi, the scientists said the community needs to have a wider access to the granular testing data that ICMR has been collating since the beginning of the pandemic. “The ICMR database is inaccessible to anyone outside of the government and perhaps also to many within the government. Institute inducts three more members to its governing council Prof. Madhavan Mukund has been appointed as the director of Chennai Mathematical Institute. He will take over from Rajeeva Karandikar on May 1. Mr. Karandikar has served the institute as director for 10 years.
Mr. Mukund, who graduated with a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Ph.D from Aarhus University, Denmark in Computer Science, has been associated with the Institute, a deemed to be university, since 1989 and served as Dean of Studies from 2011 and deputy director from 2019.
