More than 26.37 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the three-tier civic bodies in Malappuram district on Monday. When the official figures were released at 7 p.m., the district had recorded 78.81% polling.
Women turned up in large numbers, outnumbering men at many polling stations, and formed long queues from morning. As many as 3,975 polling stations had been arranged for 33.55 lakh voters spread in 15 block panchayats and 12 municipalities in the district.
In November, Pillai was invited by the Church leaders for a dinner meeting to discuss the “complaints” from the community over a series of issues, and sources said he had then agreed to convey the grievances to the Prime Minister. According to sources, the Church leaders are expected to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention in the “injustice” meted out to the Christian community in the state.
“The church leaders have already conveyed to the BJP leadership its resentment over the distribution of the scholarships for the minority students. Going by the population, it should get 40 per cent of the scholarship, but it gets only half of it. They feel justice is denied,” said a BJP leader from Kerala.

‘Very serious allegations levelled against former Minister’
The High Court on Monday dismissed a bail plea of former Public Works (PWD) Minister V.K. Ebrahim Kunju in the Palarivattom flyover corruption case.
Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan, while dismissing the bail petition of the Indian Union Muslim League leader, observed that the investigation was on in the case and very serious allegations had been levelled against the former Minister. Therefore, the petitioner could be released on bail at this stage.
