India is undercounting Covid-19 numbers and deaths by not including suspected cases

, you had done a study looking at the prevalence of Covid-19 within families. One of your key findings was that the disease was not spreading as intensely within families as it was outside and in 70%-80% of cases, family members of Covid-19 persons were not affected. Was that because of the behaviour of the virus at that time? How have things changed in this second wave? Dileep Mavalankar : The first major change we see in this second wave, at least anecdotally, is that entire families are affected, save maybe one person. We are planning to do a similar study again now, and have asked for government permission to access the data.

Vaccinating priority groups should be the immediate target: IIPH Director

‘At least 70% of population need to be vaccinated for herd immunity’ Study shows that at least 70% of the population need to be vaccinated if the ‘herd immunity’ for COVID-19 is to be achieved to break the transmission chain with efficacious vaccines that prevent infection. Given the level of vaccine hesitancy, this is a daunting task for the country. Therefore, at the moment, preventing death and severe COVID by vaccinating the priority groups should be the target, asserts Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad (IIPH), Director G.V.S. This has to be considered for India due to the sheer population size, rapid transmission of COVID and the need to stockpile vac

India battles record COVID surge as rallies, Hindu festival draw huge crowds

4 Min Read NEW DELHI/BENGALURU (Reuters) - India battled a record surge in COVID-19 cases on Friday as hospitals ran out of oxygen and beds, while politicians held election rallies and hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees attended a weeks-long festival, infuriating health officials. A massive second wave of infections, second only to the United States in total, forced authorities to restrict movement of people in Mumbai, New Delhi and other cities amid growing calls for faster vaccination rollouts. The 217,353 new cases reported by the health ministry on Friday marked the eighth record daily increase in the last nine days and took the total number of cases to nearly 14.3 million.
