New coronavirus variant emerge in India: How should our COVID response change?

New coronavirus variant emerge in India: How should our COVID response change? Firstpost 2 hours ago After genome sequencing of over 10,000 COVID-19 cases in India, researchers have discovered a new variant with two new mutations which may be better at evading the immune system. In 15-20 percent of samples from the Indian state of Maharashtra (the state accounting for 62 percent of cases in the country) a new, double mutation in key areas of the virus has been detected. These are now known as the E484Q and L452R mutations. © Provided by Firstpost A woman along with a girl walk past a graffiti, depicting the coronavirus in Mumbai, India. Double Mutant Coronavirus Variant Identified in California and India

Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images A new coronavirus variant has been detected in India and northern California. It has a combination of mutations that may help it spread more quickly or evade vaccines.  But there s no evidence yet that the variant is doubly scary or doubly transmissible, an expert said. Another worrisome coronavirus variant has made its global debut. Scientists from the Indian state of Maharashtra identified a new strain two weeks ago that s linked to between 15% and 20% of cases there. The variant has earned the somewhat ominous nickname double mutant because it has an unprecedented combination of two mutations that may help it both attach better to human cells and hide from the immune system.
