With coronavirus infections surging deeper into record territory, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing growing pressure to impose a harsh nationwide lockdown amid criticism that restrictions imposed by individual states are not enough.
Many medical experts, opposition leaders and some Supreme Court judges have suggested that a lockdown seems to be the only option with the virus raging in cities and towns, where hospitals are forced to turn patients away while relatives scramble to find oxygen. Crematoriums and burial grounds are struggling to handle the dead.

As India grapples with a deadly surge in COVID-19 cases, many South Asians in the Toronto area are rallying together to help. Our heart is broken to see the images on the television of what is happening in India, said Steve Gupta, founder of the non-profit Gupta Family Foundation which, in an effort to alleviate mounting pressure for badly needed equipment, purchased and shipped 300 oxygen concentrators to India.

BRUSSELS, May 8 (Reuters) - The European Union and India will agree to revive stalled free-trade negotiations at a virtual summit on Saturday while also seeking closer cooperation to combat climate change, as concerns about China bring Brussels and New Delhi closer.

WASHINGTON (AP) G. Balachandran turned 80 this spring a milestone of a birthday in India, where he lives. If not for the coronavirus pandemic, he would have been surrounded by family members who gathered to celebrate with him.
But with the virus ravaging his homeland, Balachandran, a retired academic, had to settle for congratulatory phone calls. Including one from his rather famous niece: Vice President Kamala Harris.
During a Zoom interview Thursday from his home in New Delhi, Harris’ uncle said he spoke with the vice president and her husband, Doug Emhoff, for quite a while. To close out the conversation, Harris assured him she’d take care of his daughter her cousin who lives in Washington.
