Three counties in the four-county area will be spending Christmas with a red rating from the Indiana State Department of Health, representing very high spread of COVID-19 as northeast Indiana remains one of the state s hotspots.
Steuben County, which has yo-yo d between orange and red for the past five weeks came back up into the red this week after going orange last week, while LaGrange and DeKalb counties stayed in red again.
Noble County is the only local county to hold in orange, a place where it s been stuck for nine weeks as case counts remain high but positivity rates hold at high, but not very high percentages.
Pandemic Christmas: Health officials concerned about a potential ‘surge on top of a surge’ after holidays
State and local health officials are expressing concern that Indiana could see “a surge on top of a surge” as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in much of the state, including Bartholomew County, remain high heading into Christmas and New Year’s.
Chief among their concerns is that people will let their guards down and defy appeals to not travel, avoid large gatherings, wear masks and maintain physical distance, which could ultimately contribute to a repeat of the autumn surge, which resulted in 3,866 COVID-19 cases and 20 deaths in Bartholomew County.

The Indiana State Department of Health on Monday reported 3,978 new coronavirus cases and 31 additional deaths.
Another 337 probable deaths have been reported. Those deaths are based on clinical diagnoses when no positive test is on record.
Indiana s positivity rate for all tests sits at 12.4%. More than 70% of ventilators throughout the state remain available, and a quarter of intensive care unit beds are open.
In Marion County, 648 new cases and 2 more deaths were reported Monday. The county s seven-day positivity rate is 13.8%.
Every county in the state continues to be color-coded as red for weekly cases per 100,000 residents. Red indicates the highest level of spread on the state s county metrics map.

INDIANAPOLIS (FOX19) -The Indiana State Department of Health reported 7,070 total COVID-19 deaths and 464,354 total cases.
State health officials say the total includes 16 new COVID-19 deaths and 6,520 cases reported Saturday.

Fayette County: 23 new cases (1999 total)
Union County: 10 new cases (425 total)
Franklin County: 10 new cases (1075 total)
Dearborn County: 76 new cases (3416 total)
Ripley County: 56 new cases (2226 total)
