Partnership with Purdue University Global to benefit members of Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association Note to Journalists: A photo of Randy Frye is available on Google Drive. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. As a former firefighter, Randy Frye holds first responders in high esteem. His empathy for them led him to becoming a champion for a partnership between Purdue University Global and the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association (IVFA) that will afford all members of the association the opportunity to pursue bachelor’s degree offerings that will help advance their careers. “The volunteer fire service in Indiana comprises the majority of firefighters,” said Frye, who has served in the Indiana House of Representatives from the 67th district since 2010. “The countless hours spent by these brave volunteers protecting us often goes unrewarded. Thanks to Purdue Global, we can now begin to offer additional college training for our volunteer firefighters, providing them with a cle

With Telemedicine On The Rise, Black Americans Risk Being Left Behind

Listen to the broadcast version of this story. After DorShann Lewis, a Black working mother in Fishers had her baby late last year, she relied on virtual visits to see her doctor.  “It was much more convenient,” she says. “I didn’t have to deal with the mask and just the overall fear. And just having the flexibility to be at home and to know that I was safe at home with the kids.” The COVID-19 pandemic has jump-started telemedicine remote healthcare services that take place on a computer or phone. Giving to colleges flattens without Bloomberg gift in 2020, ending decade of growth

AndreyPopov/iStock/Getty Images Donor-advised funds were a major source of fundraising for colleges and universities, according to an annual report released Tuesday. Charitable giving to colleges and universities was essentially flat in the 2020 fiscal year despite the pandemic. For the first time in a decade, total giving to higher education institutions fell slightly, from $49.6 billion to $49.5 billion, according to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s latest annual giving survey. Record-breaking totals last year were inflated by a $1.8 billion gift from Michael Bloomberg’s charities and foundations to Johns Hopkins University. If that gift were removed from the fiscal 2019 results, giving in fiscal 2020 would have increased by 3.6 percent, the survey found.

Bill restricting local governments, state universities from reducing climate impacts heads to senate

A bill that takes away local governments’ power to choose utilities generated without fossil fuels and that places multiple barriers for state universities to choose how they acquire their power sources is making its way through the Indiana legislature. House Bill 1191, authored by Rep. Jim Pressel and passed by the Indiana House of Representatives by a wide margin, seeks to remove the power of local governments to place restrictions on public utilities based on the energy source of their services.  The bill would make it against the law for towns, cities and counties to decide to reduce the climate change impacts of local public utilities by moving away from greenhouse gas-emitting sources, like coal-fired generation or methane-laden natural gas.
