By Local News | MyWabashValley.com Apr 9, 2021 9:37 AM INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) - As the legislative session in Indianapolis wraps up this month, several bills have already been signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb. One piece of legislation will honor Indiana s suffragists who were instrumental in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 by constructing a monument on Statehouse grounds. The legislation extends the Indiana s Women s Suffrage Centennial Commission until July 1, 2024. The group will commission the creation of the monument, which the Department of Administration will construct by January 1, 2024. Holcomb signed this bill into law on April 1. The training will include instruction on the neurobiology of trauma, trauma-informed interviewing and other investigative techniques applicable for sexual assault investigators. The focus of the bill is on adult victims of sexual assault.

Statehouse monument will honor crusaders for women s suffrage in Indiana

The General Assembly has decreed a monument recognizing the decades of efforts to secure the right to vote for women be placed on the Indiana Statehouse grounds. The Indiana House voted 97-0 Tuesday to send Senate Enrolled Act 6 to Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb, who is expected to sign it into law. It previously passed the Senate, 47-0. The Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission created the monument as part of its 2020 celebrations of the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote throughout the nation. Holcomb’s Department of Administration, however, declined to place the monument at the Statehouse absent General Assembly approval.
