MUMBAI: The number of medical experts, be they neurologists, pharmacists, ayurveds or nurses, enrolling for PhD has been steadily going up.
While 5,981 healthcare professionals enrolled for doctoral studies in 2016-17, the corresponding number is 1.5 times that at 9,330 in 2019-20. In 2017-18 and 2018-19, the enrolments for a PhD in the health sciences numbered 7,086 and 7,473, respectively, said the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) released by the HRD ministry recently.
For 2019-20, the 9,330 medical postgraduates are enrolled in 48 sub-streams, with the highest number enrolled in pharmacy at 3,536. Ayurveda has 361 and dentistry, 507. At the PhD level, only 153 students are from the general medicine stream while 665 are from nursing.
The
sudden drop in medical admissions of students from Tamil Nadu following the introduction of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a cause for worry and the State government has a duty to study the root of this problem, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)/ CPI (M) has submitted before the Madras High Court (
K Nagarajan v. Union of India and ors).
The CPI(M) further added that
after the introduction of NEET, the number of government school students securing government seats in medical colleges dropped drastically.
Before introduction, ninety percent of students getting admission to government medical colleges in the State, were from government schools, aided schools or low-cost private schools teaching the State Board syllabus.
Enrolment in higher education on the wane in Telangana
In most other States, the trend is opposite and the number of students pursuing higher education has been increasing.

HYDERABAD: In a worrying trend, the number of students enrolling for Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate courses in Telangana has been gradually declining in the State.
This has come to light in the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report. According to the report, the number of students who enrolled in PG courses declined from 2.02 lakh in the year 2015-16 to 1.84 lakh in 2019-20, whereas the number of students enrolled in UG courses declined to 10.7 lakh in 2019-20 from 11.6 lakh in 2015-16.
