Unions to protest on May Day, demand free universal vaccination
NEW DELHI, Apr 28: A joint platform of 10 central trade unions on Wednesday decided to press the government for free universal vaccination, Rs 7,500 per month cash transfer for poor families and free 10 kg ration for them, among others, during the pandemic.
The unions will also protest against the “anti-worker, anti-farmer, anti-people policies” of the government on May Day (Saturday), stated a statement by the joint platform.
The joint platform has written a letter to the Prime Minister regarding their demands.
The trade unions deplore the “callous attitude” of the government in handling the COVID-19 crisis, the statement said.

PuVyaSri Srinivasan
U.S. Srinivasan, better known to a generation of book lovers in Bengaluru as PuVyaSri (Pustaka Vyapari Srinivasan or bookseller Srinivasan ), passed away late on Monday night.
The 88-year-old passed away in his sleep, said sources in All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), of which he was a member. He has donated his body for medical research.
An itinerant bookseller who carried books to people s homes and workplaces to sell them, he always said that book selling was never a business but a transaction with friends for him. He travelled the length and breadth of the city either on foot or in public transport to deliver books.

The state governments of Haryana and Jharkhand have recently declared that their state would reserve 75% of their employment for `localsâ. For Jharkhand these reservations are for jobs paying up to Rs 30,000 a month and in Haryana, it is jobs earning less than Rs 50,000 a month in the private sector. The decision in Jharkhand was apparently taken looking at the large number of migrant youths coming back to their homes during the lockdown. The stateâs unemployment rate gradually fell down to 11.3% in January 2021 after rising up to 59.2% at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, revealed the Economic Survey. In January 2020, the unemployment rate was 10.6%.
