11 orangutans smuggled to Thailand, Malaysia back to Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) Two Sumatran orangutans previously smuggled to Thailand and nine others trafficked to Malaysia have been returned to Indonesia, officials said. The sending home of the two orangutans shows the solidity and continued commitment and cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand in fighting the trade in endangered species as mandated by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), Charge d affaires ad Interim at Embassy of Indonesia in Bangkok, Thailand, Dicky Komar said in a statement on Friday.
At Indonesia s request, Thailand agreed to return the animals to their natural habitat in Indonesia. The two orangutans left a wildlife rescue center in Thailand to be flown to the Indonesian capital city Jakarta.
