Tropical cyclone Seroja carried heavy rains and strong winds that triggered flash floods and landslides in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) on Sunday, 4th April 2021. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reported 138 people died, 61 missing, and up to 1,114 destroyed or damaged houses. Residents lost their homes due to being submerged by water, mud, and soil as well as public facilities and infrastructure damaged by the disaster, such as bridges, roads, and airports being submerged by water. Areas affected were East Flores, Malacca, Lembata, Ngada, Alor, East Sumba, Sabu Raijua, Rote Ndao, Timor Tengah Selatan, Ende, and Kupang City. Access and communication to affected areas have been difficult as roads and communication facilities were damaged.
Earthquake strikes Indonesia
The afternoon quake hit offshore about 45 kilometres southwest of Malang city in East Java, damaging hundreds of homes as well as schools, government offices and mosques across the region.
Several communities around Indonesia had been evacuated. National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Raditya Jati added:
“Our latest data shows that seven people died, two are seriously injured and 10 others sustained minor injuries”.

The quake struck at a relatively deep 82 kilometres – shallower quakes tend to do more damage than deep ones.

Plan Indonesia Distributes Aid for Flash Flood Survivors in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara

Lewoleba, 6 April 2021 – A series of disasters, which include flash flood, landslide, as well as tropical cyclone has been sweeping the East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) since last Saturday (3/4). The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shared that an amount of two tropical cyclone seeds in the Indonesian region could also result in extreme weather until the next Friday (9/4), with risks of flash floods announced for the Kupang Regency, Kupang city, Timor Tengah Utara, and Timor Tengah Selatan.
Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia), a humanitarian organization that has been working in the Lembata Regency, NTT, since 2006, noted that at least 2,227 out of approximately 10 thousand of its sponsored children (1,186 girls and 1,041 boys) and their families in the area are affected by this set of disasters.
