Sadiq Khan s promise of rent controls would make life worse for Londoners - they ve failed everywhere else

“The art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy,” wrote Harry Hazlitt in Economics in One Lesson (1946), “it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s demand for powers to introduce rent control ignores this central lesson. This is economic illiteracy of the highest order. Khan is only considering the immediate effects of freezing rent: a short-term benefit to those currently renting helping higher income earners who have existing rental arrangements. This entirely ignores the longer term effects.
