Madrid set for early elections after regional government collapses

Spain s political landscape has been shaken after the regional government in Madrid split and called an early election. The region s president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced on Wednesday the right-wing coalition in the Spanish capital consisting of the liberal Ciudadanos (Citizens) party and the conservative Partido Popular (PP) had been dissolved, less than two years into its current mandate. It was sparked by events a few hours earlier in south-east Spain. There, in Murcia, Citizens withdrew its support for PP in the regional government and announced a surprise pact with the Socialist Party (PSOE). Citizens then presented a vote of no-confidence in the government, which, if successful, would give the party the regional presidency.

The motion was defeated following division of votes. At the end of a marathon six-hour discussion on the motion, Speaker Gian Chand Gupta announced in the House that 55 members had voted against the motion while 32 legislators had backed it. In place of secret voting, which former chief minister B S Hooda had earlier demanded in the House, the Speaker first asked the members favouring the motion to rise from their seats and those against it were asked to stand. A headcount was done later. The 55 members who voted against the motion included 39 from the BJP, 10 of ally Jannayak Janta Party, five Independents and Gopal Kanda from Haryana Lokhit Party.

Image: VELI NHLAPO The DA in the Gauteng legislature has called into question the results of a motion of no confidence vote against premier David Makhura held earlier this week. DA chief whip Mike Moriarty said in a statement on Thursday that he had written to speaker Ntombi Mekgwe to ask for a recount of votes. The DA had initially asked for a vote via a secret ballot against Makhura, who is also facing internal fights within his own party. The motion of no confidence against him was motivated by recent revelations about the involvement of his office in the personal protective equipment corruption scandal.
