Parents of high school athletes raise questions over championship game ticket prices

Created: April 08, 2021 09:01 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Many high school athletes in New Mexico are getting the chance to play championship games at University of New Mexico facilities this week, and along with excitement, there are concerns over how much families have to pay to attend the games. Dozens of fans watched the 3A boys soccer championship Thursday, as Sandia Prep beat Bosque School, 2-0. Many are just thankful the game could take place during the pandemic. “We can’t beat that so it’s great,” Bosque School parent Art Sandoval said. Jill Levin, another Bosque School parent, said that a few months ago they weren’t sure if the championship would happen at all.

On Monday, the New Mexico Activities Association and its Board of Directors met for an emergency hearing to settle schedules and to see if they can in fact play sports this academic school year. Not only was there discussion, but more than one voice was raised during that discussion, to which board member Gabe Holguin toward the end of the meeting said, “I’d like to remind the board we’re all on the same team and we should maintain some professionalism and respect for each other’s opinions when we’re speaking. Body language speaks volumes, and it appears to me we’re not doing that and I’ll leave it at that.”
