A flourishing ETF industry flexes its muscles in 2020 Dave Nadig sees an ‘anything but beta’ trend emerging, focused on active strategies. The U.S. exchange-traded fund market had an extraordinary 2020. Topping $5 trillion in assets under management, the ETF business benefited from a confluence of expected and unexpected events. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission s ETF Rule, which went into effect at the end of 2019, made it simpler to launch index-tracking and fully transparent active ETFs. Like other central banks before it, the Federal Reserve finally accepted ETFs into its monetary toolbox and now holds nearly $9 billion across 16 corporate bond ETFs as part of its Secondary Market Corporate Credit Facility. And, lastly, a wide swath of ETF issuers welcomed growth and experimentation in active ETFs, including the approval and launch of several ETFs that give investment advisers more leeway in how frequently their positions are disclosed.
