Amarillo districts see STAAR test results after COVID-impacted year

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced that the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, tests would not be given for the 2019-20 school year.  However, as the pandemic continued, TEA made the decision for districts to give the test in the 2020-21 school year, “in order to provide critically important information about individual student learning that teachers and parents can use to help students grow,” officials said at the time.  The results from the 2020-21 STAAR/EOC tests were recently released statewide, giving individuals the chance to see the pandemic’s impact on learning.

Menahga School to continue in-person learning in 2021-22 In order to qualify for Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funding – $1.1 million, Wellen said – the federal government requires a plan for in-person education.  8:19 pm, Jul. 1, 2021 × The Menahga School District was one of only 18 in the state to offer in-person learning for the entire school year, according to Superintendent Kevin Wellen. “Since we have been successful this year, it is our plan to reopen again in person for the coming year,” he wrote in his June report to the Menahga School Board. Praising staff and the community, Wellen said, “A lot of challenges came, and everyone stepped up.”

River Road ISD passes 2021-22 Budget

With the passage of its 2021-22 budget, officials with River Road Independent School District are preparing for a school year as close to normal as possible, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wane across the region.  The River Road ISD Board of Trustees recently passed the $15,099,364 budget during a special meeting. Andy Nies, assistant superintendent, said there were no significant changes to the budget presented to the board during its recent workshop, other than a small uptick in expected revenue to the district from an updated template from the state.  River Road ISD has a July 1 budget, meaning the district has to approve its budget for the upcoming school year prior to that date each year. Nies said this gives the district an advantage, giving them a leg up in getting supplies ordered and having preparations in place for the upcoming school year.
