For the first time, U.S. Army staff has gotten a look this week at the Sikorsky S-97 Raider helicopter in flight, one of two initial prototypes of a new generation of aircraft the Stratford manufacturer hopes will become the backbone of the U.S. military for decades.

(Photo courtesy of Northrop Grumman) WASHINGTON Northrop Grumman will build a prototype of its 20mm chain gun, dubbed Sky Viper, for the U.S. Army to evaluate for use on its future vertical lift aircraft, the company said March 10 during a media briefing. The service is deep into the evaluation of another 20mm weapon system the XM915 Gatling gun from General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems but also plans to conduct a similar evaluation of Northrop’s Sky Viper that will help it decide what type of gun system is best for the future attack reconnaissance aircraft, or FARA.

Northrop Grumman announced Wednesday that it is building a new 20mm cannon for the Army s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft one that it says is far more accurate than the AH-64 Apache s 30mm chain gun.
The new chain gun, named the Sky Viper, will be similar to the M230 30mm cannon, which Northrop manufactures for the Apache, but will feature new technologies to make it more accurate and produce less recoil, Quinn Canole, director of the Guns Operating Unit at Northrop Grumman, told defense reporters Wednesday.
