CHISHOLM - Members of the Minnesota Discovery Center announced last week that they plan to offer another nine-week Introduction to Documentary Film Production Workshop to aspiring northland filmmakers.
After a successful workshop last year, Iron Range raised filmmaker Matthew Koshmrl is scheduled to host another set of classes starting in May. He is offering instruction on how to create a short documentary film and a platform to work, learn, create, and consume non-fiction storytelling in the digital era.
Koshmrl again plans to guide participants through the process of creating their own documentary short film and to teach them about the historical and conceptual analysis of what defines a documentary.To do so, he uses screenings, lectures, hands-on lab filmmaking exercises, reading and production assignments. Loonies just wrapped up their first week of business in downtown Virginia. And things are heating up, with custom cappuccinos and cheesy, wood-fired pizzas. I want people to leave feeling satisfied. And we really focus on high quality food, explained Cassandra Hainey, co-owner.
This all started when she and two others, Jeff Zupetz and Allen Lewis, attended the Blandin Leadership Training together. They decided to open up this shop, with the main goal of improving mental health.

Kelly Hertling knows how hard it is to lure new employees to the Iron Range.
As human resources supervisor for L&M Radiator, Inc., a radiator manufacturer in Hibbing, she sees skilled laborers gravitate toward the area’s union jobs while potential salespeople and engineers recruited from elsewhere worry there’s nothing to do in the area.
“We struggle to recruit people from outside the area to come to the Iron Range,” Hertling said. “When you’re interviewing and such, you’re not just selling your company to a potential applicant or potential employee, you’re selling the region, the area.”
