Athletics: Neeraj Chopra, Hima Das set for an overseas stint in Turkey; Avinash Sable in Uganda

India’s top track and field athletes, including javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and sprinter Hima Das will embark on a training-cum-competition tour of Turkey later this month, the national federation said on Tuesday.
Olympic-bound Indian steeplechaser Avinash Sable is also set to train in Uganda from April 10 to July 20 after getting a go ahead from the Sports Ministry, which approved a proposal sent by the Athletics Federation of India.

New Delhi, Apr 7 (PTI) Olympic-bound Indian steeplechaser Avinash Sable is set to train in Uganda from April 10 to July 20 after getting a go ahead from the Sports Ministry, which approved a proposal sent by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The 26-year-old will be training under foreign coach Addy Ruiter, who has guided athletes like Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, the current world record holder in men s 5000m and 10,000m. Kenya, Morocco and Uganda are considered the hubs of steeplechase.

New Delhi, Apr 7 (IANS): Ahead of the Billie Jean King Cup formerly Fed Cup - tie against Latvia on April 16-17, Indias tennis ace Sania Mirza got a morale boost as she was included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Wednesday.
The winner of six doubles Grand Slam titles, Sania had opted out of the scheme in 2017 but the 34-year-old was selected during the 56th meeting of the Mission Olympic Cell.
The only Indian female player to win a WTA title, Sania has qualified for the postponed Tokyo Games based on the system of protected ranking. Though the Indian is currently ranked 157th in the world, Sania enjoys a special ranking of No. 9 as she had applied to the WTA for her ranking to be secured when she took a pregnancy break after the China Open in October 2017.

New Delhi, April 6 : The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Tuesday reiterated its support to the Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes, saying that it has all along realised Indias dream at the Olympic Games through athlete-centric development .
The ministry, through its Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for elite athletes, has spent upwards of Rs five crore on the 15 Olympic-bound shooters.
A sum of Rs 1.02 crore has been spent on shotgun stalwart Mairaj Ahmad Khan, who was a part of the scheme from September 2017 to August 2018 and was re-inducted in December 2019 after he booked an Olympic quota place in skeet.
