HEALTH CARE REFORM LAW TO ADDRESS EQUITY: Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday signed a law seeking to address longstanding health care inequities by requiring that medical professionals undergo implicit bias training and creating a HHS task force, among other measures.

Westlake Hospital, closed nearly two years ago, faces an easier path to reopening under legislation signed into law Tuesday by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
The law cuts the regulatory tape for a potential buyer to reopen the safety-net hospital. A health care provider will be exempted from having to receive a “certification of need.”
“Health care is a right, not a privilege and making sure people have equal access to quality health care is a top priority for this administration,” Pritzker said. “Reopening Westlake Hospital is a step toward addressing longstanding disparities in our health care system that have left some residents without the medical care they desperately need.”

Mercy Hospital & Medical Center has finalized a deal to sell its facility for $1 to a Michigan-based not-for-profit, in a deal that promises to keep the Bronzeville hospital open after months of uncertainty regarding its future.
The agreement between Mercy and Insight Chicago requires Insight to continue operating the safety net hospital as a full-service community acute-care facility in exchange for ownership of the building, its equipment and parking facilities, the companies announced in a joint statement Saturday.
