Poor wages, a devalued currency, and intimidation are haunting journalists in the southern African country of Zimbabwe.
With over a decade of experience as a freelance journalist under his belt, Thomas Madhuku, 35, has faced imprisonment and harassment from law enforcement agencies, and has faced numerous attacks while performing his duties.
Just last year, he was attacked at a press conference organized by student leaders over the abduction of Tawanda Muchehiwa, a Midlands State University journalism student.
“We were covering a press conference by ZINASU [Zimbabwe National Students Union] leaders who were demanding answers on the abduction of Muchehiwa. My phone was taken away by some militia with the assistance of the police,” he told Anadolu Agency.

WASHINGTON: Iranian authorities have convicted an American-Iranian businessman on spying charges, US media has reported, in a recently revealed case which comes amid high tensions between the two countries.
The State Department confirmed late on Monday in a statement to AFP that we are aware of the reports that Iran has detained another US citizen . It did not identify the person and declined to provide further details, but Iranian media on Thursday reported the conviction of Emad Sharqi, describing him as the deputy head for international affairs at an Iranian venture capital company called Sarava. The Young Journalists Club, a news agency linked to Iranian state television, said Sharqi had been caught trying to illegally flee the country from western borders .

The Young Journalists Club (YJC) website announced on Thursday, January 14 that Iranian security forces have arrested the international deputy head of Sarava Holding, Emad Edward Sharqi, while he was set to leave Iran.
The YJC published a picture of Sharqi being detained at an airport.
According to the report, a court had previously sentenced Sharqi to ten years in prison for espionage and military intelligence gathering. He was released on bail and intended to flee Iran before the appeals court, the YJC reported.
This is the first time that the name of one of the managers of Sarava Holding and charges against him have been published in the local media.
