The growing ferocity of Israel’s military offensive on Gaza amid continued rocket attacks by Hamas has largely overtaken the original crisis that triggered it just 50 miles away in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem. The current crisis began earlier this month with Palestinian demonstrations against the imminent expulsion of some eighteen families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in order to put Israeli settlers in their place. The expulsions are part of a broader effort by radical settler groups and Israeli authorities targeting the homes of dozens of Palestinian families. Palestinian demonstrators were met with a massive show of force by Israeli authorities who responded with tear gas, stun grenades, sponge-tipped bullets, and beatings, leading to hundreds of injuries. Palestinian protests mobilized in response to planned evictions in East Jerusalem, and police have cracked down on protesters as clashes have continued to escalate during the holy month of Ramadan. Police forces attacked worshippers at East Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque on May 8, the last Friday of the holiday, and raided the mosque again on Monday. Hamas has responded with rocket fire, provoking Israeli airstrikes. The death toll so far includes 65 people in Gaza, including 16 children, and seven Israelis, including two children. The clashes represent the worst fighting in the region in seven years.
Few of the Arab League nations speaking out, including those that have normalized relationships with Israel, have actually leveraged their power to advance human rights for Palestinians, Shakir said.
Turkey’s foreign minister has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks, his first trip since journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s 2018 murder in Istanbul worsened relations between both countries.
Mevlut Cavusoglu’s visit, apparently aimed at mending ties with Riyadh, comes amid renewed clashes at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.
Turkish officials had said Cavusoglu’s visit could include talks on possible sales of Turkish drones to Saudi Arabia, which they said Riyadh had requested.
