Quiet Bethlehem means ‘less business, more religion’

Deprived of its usual tourist influx by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bethlehem is to celebrate a quiet Christmas this year that is less about commerce and more about religion, its parish priest said.
In a normal year, hundreds of thousands of visitors flood the Palestinian city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, less than 10km from Jerusalem.
Those seeking a quiet moment of contemplation in the Church of the Nativity the site of Christ’s birth, according to tradition generally have to use their elbows to maneuver through the crowds.

A senior official with the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health said that the Palestinians do not expect Israel to sell them, or purchase on their behalf, the vaccine from any country.
The official told The Jerusalem Post that the Palestinians will soon receive nearly four million Russian-made vaccines against COVID-19….
Another PA Ministry of Health official said that he expected vaccinations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to begin next month. He, too, clarified that
the PA has not asked Israel to supply the Palestinians with the vaccine.

When the coronavirus pandemic left Bethlehem without its hordes of visitors, tour guide Raed Bannura needed a new source of income.
His plan, a sandwich shop, was hardly revolutionary and the ingredients of his signature dish – meat with onions and spices wrapped in a tortilla – were certainly not groundbreaking.
But, when it came to marketing, Bannura has grabbed attention.
“I have a special sandwich, ” he said. “I call it ‘Corona sandwich’.”
Bethlehem, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, hosts the majestic Church of the Nativity, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born.
