Officials are scrutinizing NSO s business practices on the back of allegations that governments and other entities leveraged Pegasus to target dissidents and journalists, Israel s Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Wednesday, as reported by
MIT Technology Review.
Israel declined to name the agencies conducting the NSO inquiry, but local media outlets have in the past claimed a number of groups are investigating the matter including the foreign ministry, justice ministry, Mossad and military intelligence, the report said.
Israel s Defense Ministry begins NSO investigation
Defense Minister Benny Gantz said that use of Pegasus according to its license is first and foremost the responsibility of the governments buying the surveillance tool.
Representatives from several Israeli departments came to NSO s offices yesterday to begin examining reports and allegations recently raised, according to a brief announcement published by the Ministry of Defense. The announcement gave no details about who has actually visited NSO s offices for the investigation.
The probe comes in the wake of last week s major international reports about NSO s cyberattack activities worldwide.
