DUBAI Iran’s top diplomat complained in a leaked recording that the elite Revolutionary Guards had more influence in foreign affairs and the country’s nuclear dossier than him, in remarks that shine a light on ties between the government and the powerful force.
Relations between pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani’s government and the Guards are important because the influence of the hardline paramilitary force is so great that it can disrupt any rapprochement with the West if it feels this would endanger its economic and political interests.

Leaked excerpts from an interview with Iran s foreign minister have ignited controversy inside the Islamic Republic. The comments by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad-Zarif were never intended to be broadcast, but officials say more than three hours of the seven-hour interview were leaked on Sunday.
The excerpts first appeared on Iran International, a London-based channel that Tehran views as a hostile, pro-Saudi Arabia outlet.

Iran’s Defense Minister has shaken his fist at Israel after Saturday’s explosion on a tanker off the coast of Syria and this month’s blast at the Natanz nuclear complex.
Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami (pictured) proclaimed on Sunday, “The power wielded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and Army have provided the country with security today and awarded it with active deterrence capability.”
He asserted that while Iran’s enemies have a hard time with this reality, they should know that Iran’s troops “will resolutely keep on the path of the country’s martyrs in their purpose to safeguard the nation and Islam” under the Supreme Leader’s command.
