Why Iran Won’t Easily Recover from Mohammad Hejazi’s Death
Hejazi’s passing was a loss not only for the Quds Force but also for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps itself.
The sudden death of Mohammad Hejazi, the former deputy commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Quds Force, in April represents another blow to the regime’s praetorian guard, following the U.S. strike which killed Qassem Soleimani last year. In a condolence message, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Hejazi undertook “great” and “influential” responsibilities in the IRGC. The ascension of his replacement, Mohammad Reza Fallahzadeh, elevates a commander with battlefield and operational experience in the Levant. But Fallahzadeh will be a different kind of deputy from Hejazi.

A number of people have been arrested in Iran over the years accused of spying against the government. Last year, the authorities arrested five Iranians on charges of spying for Israel, Britain and Germany. They were convicted and at least two were given prison sentences. In July 2017, the authorities rounded up seventeen of its citizens and charged them with spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Accusations of espionage have also been levelled at many Iranians in the diaspora, especially journalists and charity workers.

Tehran, Iran – Iran’s foreign ministry has “strongly rejected” the Ukrainian security chief’s assertion that the shooting down of a passenger plane last year was intentional, accusing him of politicising the issue.
Foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Saturday it is unfortunate that Ukrainian officials continue to publicly air “personal and bespoke hypotheses” despite technical reports offered by Iran.
He said it appears Ukraine is not after resolving the case of Flight PS752, whose downing killed all 176 people on board, and wishes to make political gains by “linking this painful accident with its local issues or foreign affairs with other countries”.
