AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Lee Freund didn’t want to involve her grown children in her efforts to sign up for the vaccine.
“I didn’t want to burden them and I didn’t want them to think I was stupid,” Freund said.
Freund, a 78-year-old widow, tried to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine shot, but got grocery delivery instead, highlighting problems some older Americans have getting vaccinated.

State expands vaccine eligibility
Gov. Mike DeWine has expanded the list of Ohioans eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. DeWine says Ohio this week will receive nearly 450,000 doses of all vaccines including the recently approved Johnson & Johnson single shot version. Starting Thursday he says people age 60 and older can now get in line for shots. He also is adding pregnant women, people with Type 1 diabetes, law enforcement officers, firefighters, prison employees, funeral directors, and preschool teachers to the list. DeWine says the new vaccines will be sent to an expanded number of pharmacies as well as to local health departments, hospitals, and chain pharmacies. DeWine says more than 900,000 Ohioans fall under these new eligibility guidelines for receiving the vaccine.
Biden triumphalism:
– We ve increased vaccine supply to states by 70%
– Nearly 60% of people 75+ have now received at least one shot that was 14% 6 weeks ago
– Almost 50% of the people 65+ have at least one shot now that was 8% 6 weeks ago
As I posited a few weeks ago, I think if swapping in a new administration was a key driver, we’d see the slope of vaccination increase given a decent interval after the Inaugural. We’re not seeing that. I think, instead, we’re seeing collective efforts at improving delivery and uptake all across our Federalized fragmented system. The Biden administration does not get to speak for “we” here.
The system pulls a computer-generated random sample from the county's vaccine registry who will receive instructions on how to schedule an appointment.
