Park City, Utah A Chapel Hill man died Monday while practicing holding his breath in an out-of-state hotel swimming pool.
The Summit County Sheriff s Office posted on Facebook that deputies responded to the Westgate Hotel in Park City, Utah, around 9:45 p.m.
At the hotel, deputies learned that the 22-year-old drowned in the hotel s outdoor pool while holding his breath underwater.
According to deputies, the man was staying at the hotel with three friends, and the group had been drinking alcohol throughout the day. The man told his friends he was going to try to hold his breath underwater longer than ever before.
A 22-year-old man from North Carolina drowned in the pool of a Canyons Village hotel Monday evening, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the man was swimming at the Westgate Hotel and told his friends that he was going to hold his breath under water. When the man did not resurface for five minutes, his friends pulled him from the pool and began performing CPR until medical responders arrived around 9:45 p.m.
The man was transported to Park City Hospital but was declared dead.
The group of friends had been drinking, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Summit County on Wednesday initiated the process to issue $20 million in debt to pay for facilities upgrades and infrastructure projects. Some of the projects have been contemplated for years, officials said. This 2016 recreation facilities master planning exercise included some of the same land being discussed for these projects.
