State Police Begin Deployment Of Body Worn Cameras
New York State Police have deployed their first body-worn cameras as the agency begins its statewide rollout.
The requirements for Troopers to wear body-worn cameras is the result of legislation signed into law last June by Governor Andrew Cuomo. At this highly critical time for the relationship between police and the communities they serve across the state, I am proud that we are implementing this program as police agencies statewide do the important work of reimagining their work and repairing trust in the criminal justice system, Cuomo said. This step is part of a progressive package of reforms that will increase transparency in policing and accountability among all law enforcement agencies statewide, and we look forward to continuing this important work in the future.

The city’s police force blames last fall’s cyber attack for delaying the launch of its body-worn camera program.
“Due to the cyber incident in the fall of 2020, the Body Worn Camera Program implementation for the Saint John Police Force had to be rescheduled,” said Spokesperson Jim Hennessey in a statement to Acadia Broadcasting.
“As we continue to re-establish our internal programming, a decision on the activation and rollout date of the Body Worn Cameras, will be decided upon and shared with citizens.”

Body cameras, increased recruitment of minorities and increased transparency were among the recommendations of the Riverhead Law Enforcement Advisory Panel (LEAP), which on Friday released its preliminary draft of the Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Plan (PRRCP) in accordance with an executive order from Governor Andrew Cuomo last year.
The order required all municipalities to conduct a similar plan and came in the wake of the police-involved death of George Floyd in Minnesota, which was captured on video and led to protests taking place throughout the nation.
