Community Coalition hosts environmental discussion panel

The Story of Plastic documentary to air April 21 in honor of Earth Day To-go cups, takeout boxes and shopping bags are all staples of a good night out in Savannah and water bottles and coffee cups are an easy fix on a busy workday. But the environmental cost of that ease is starting to add up. Lawmakers in New York, Maine name packaging EPR among top priorities at Plastics Recycling Conference

Dive Brief: Extended producer responsibility (EPR) bills for packaging are among the top priorities for lawmakers in New York and Maine, panelists said at the Plastics Recycling Conference April 7.  New York Sen. Todd Kaminsky said he thinks his EPR bill has a fair chance of passing before the state’s legislative session ends in June, even though environmental groups such as the New York League of Conservation voters said they were disappointed the bill was not included in the recently passed state budget.   Maine Rep. Nicole Grohoski, who is drafting a similar packaging bill she plans to introduce soon,  is already promoting the measure as a way to increase the state’s recycling rate. The Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) anticipates a rival bill, possibly backed by packaging industry group AMERIPEN, also could be introduced soon.

Oregon Spearheads Plastic Pollution Legislation

KLCC s Karen Richards reports. Nick Mallos, a Senior Director at the organization, said the waste of all plastic disposables is up, and now is a critical time for legislation. Two proposed bills in Oregon would have phased out single-use plastic and polystyrene foam for food use statewide.   “So these two bills did not make it out of committee, Mallos told KLCC, but we are optimistic that in the next legislature, once hopefully COVID has subsided a little bit, that we can resurface these types of policies.”     Federally, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley reintroduced the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act a couple weeks ago. It would ban some single-use items and mandate recycled content minimums for manufacturers.
