COMSTOCK PARK, MI – Feeding America West Michigan is struggling to find enough truck drivers to keep up with a busy food distribution schedule.
The food bank is looking to hire three additional drivers to help with ongoing levels of increased need due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Without truck drivers we can’t pick up the food we need to pick up and bring the food where it needs to go,” said Molly Kooi, communication manager with Feeding America West Michigan.

Did you know dairy is one of the most requested but least donated items at food banks?
Yoplait is on a mission to bridge that gap and make dairy more accessible through its support of Feeding America.
The organization serves communities around our Reed City, Michigan, plant.
“Yoplait’s Force for Good ambition is to help close America’s nutrition gap with the goodness of dairy,” says Pilar Moya, Brand Experience manager, Yoplait. “However, helping solve the problem goes beyond providing dairy donations. We also learned that food banks are often challenged with providing perishable foods, including dairy, due to limited refrigeration capabilities. We decided to partner with Feeding America to help solve this critical issue.”
CADILLAC â Feeding America West Michigan is fresh off one of the busiest years they ve ever experienced.
Lorrie Hockanson, Feeding America West Michigan branch manager, said in her 12 years with the organization, she s never seen as much need as she did in 2020. It was crazy, Hockanson said. In a good way. It s good that we can get this food out to people who need it.
When Hockanson started at Feeding America, she said they had five or six mobile food pantry distribution events a month; in 2020, she said they held a distribution event in area counties almost every day; and already this year, Hockanson said they re averaging around 15 distributions a month.
