France confirms 18,436 new COVID-19 cases

PARIS, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) France on Sunday registered 18,436 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, pushing the total count to 3,053,617, while prospect rises for a third nationwide confinement to curb the spread of more infectious new variants. Since France reported its first COVID-19 cases in late January 2020, a total of 73,049 people have died from the disease, figures released by health authorities showed. Hospital admissions increased by 493 to 26,393, while the number of patients in intensive care units (ICUs) was up by 69 to 2,965. A curfew starting at 6 p.m. has been in force since Jan. 16, forcing shops to close two hours earlier and citizens to stay at home until 6 a.m. in a move to contain the viral circulation amid the emergence of highly infectious virus variants.

Slovenia confirms first case of new strain of coronavirus

LJUBLJANA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) The new variant of coronavirus first identified in Britain has been officially confirmed in Slovenia, Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced on Sunday. The new strain was detected in a person from Serbia s region of Kosovo who was in Belgium on company business. He arrived in Slovenia on Saturday and had tested twice, with one coming back positive and one negative, Jansa told a press conference. In addition to the first confirmed case, another two cases of the coronavirus variant are suspected as a result of the testing of 80 Slovenian samples, Jansa said, adding that it was possible the variant has been in circulation in Slovenia for a while.

Saturday also saw the country s daily infections hitting a new high at 15,333. To date, Portugal has recorded 10,194 deaths and 624,469 cases, DGS said. The surge in infections and deaths in the past week mainly attributed to the coronavirus variant first detected in Britain has prompted the government to close schools for 15 days. As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, vaccination is underway in Portugal and other countries with the already-authorized coronavirus vaccines.
