LOS ANGELES - South Korea’s Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced on Tuesday that it had detected its first two cases of a new delta plus coronavirus variant, Reuters reported.
So far, reports of the new variant are limited, but there have been some cases identified in multiple countries including the U.K., Portugal and India.
Cases are headed upwards in about one-third of countries

COVID-19 cases worldwide surpassed 200 million on Wednesday, according to tallies from Johns Hopkins University and Reuters, as the more-infectious delta variant threatens places with low vaccination rates.
The surge in cases is highlighting the gap in inoculation rates between wealthy and poor countries. Cases are rising in about one-third of the world s countries, many of which have not even given half their population a first dose.
The World Health Organization on Wednesday called for a moratorium on COVID-19 vaccine boosters until at least 10% of the population in every country is vaccinated.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged the countries and companies controlling the supply of doses to change course immediately and prioritise less wealthy states.
The UN health agency has for months raged against the glaring and growing imbalance, branding it a moral outrage.
Israel last month began rolling out a booster shot for over-60s, while Germany said Tuesday it would start offering third doses of the two-shot Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines from September.

India reported 42,982 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, taking the country’s tally to 3,18,12,114 since the pandemic broke out in January last year. The new cases are marginally higher than Wednesday’s count of 42,625.
The country’s toll rose by to 533 to 4,26,290.
The active caseload increased to 4,11,076. As many as 3,09,74,748 patients have recovered from the disease so far.
The Centre has asked states and Union Territories to consider imposing local-level restrictions to stop mass gatherings during festivals such as Muharram, Onam, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja.
