Vietnam ratified the Convention against torture in 2015 and has still a long way to go in implementing human rights standards. There is a widespread use of torture and ill-treatment, in particular in police stations, including by medical doctors, with the aim of extracting confessions, that sometimes results in the death in custody of the suspects. The country records high rates of deaths in custody due to police violence. Deprivation of medical care is also used to try to force prisoners of conscience, including human rights defenders, to confess crimes. Related resources
