We have this year’s inductees for the World Videogame Hall of Fame, and among them are a legendary strategy game, one of the original plane games, and a couple of other very influential old games besides.
Microsoft Flight Simulator, StarCraft, and Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? lead this year’s class, at least as far as PC-relevant games go. They’re joined by Animal Crossing, which we’re sure is a fine game but can’t be certain unless a port happens. The Strong Museum of Play, the body that oversees the hall of fame, has created write-ups for the class of 2021, and put together testimonials from some of the developers involved.
The push for greater racial representation in tech fields is an ever-continuing endeavor and the folks at USC Games have taken a large step to increase Black and Indigenous representation in gaming with the creation of the Gerald A. Lawson Endowment Fund.
The Fund will provide student support for Black and Indigenous students who wish to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees in game design or computer science from USC s prestigious program. With financial support from additional game and technology companies and donors, USC Games’ vision is to expand the initiative and support other aspects of diversity and equity, including salary support for additional Black and Indigenous faculty as well as labs and projects that address issues that affect these marginalized communities.

The four games were on Thursday honoured for their influence on popular culture and the video game industry. They were chosen from a field of finalists that also included: Call of Duty, FarmVille, FIFA International Soccer, Guitar Hero, Mattel Football, Pole Position, Portal and Tron.
Nintendo debuted the Animal Crossing game in 2001, offering a leisurely pace that appealed to a wider range of people than other titles of its time, said Racquel Gonzales, research historian at The Strong museum, where the World Video Game Hall of Fame is located.
