Mitsui Chemicals to Double Taiwan Output of Chipmaking Material
(Nikkei Asia) Mitsui Chemicals will spend nearly $91.5 million to ramp up production in Taiwan of a special tape used in semiconductor manufacturing as demand grows from the spread of smartphones and the Internet of Things.
Mitsui Chemicals will update its factory in the city of Kaohsiung to bring new equipment online in 2023. Annual capacity there for the tape, used on silicon wafers to protect against damage or contamination during the back-grinding process, will double to 7.6 million sq. meters.
Mitsui Chemicals also makes the tape in the Japanese city of Nagoya and says it is the world s top producer, commanding a roughly 40% share of the global market.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) growth in the first two months of the year shows that the external environment has been constructive for the domestic economy.
The IPI, which is a monthly economic indicator measuring real output in the manufacturing, mining, electricity, and gas industries, rose 1.5 per cent year-on-year in February 2021, propelled by a 4.5 per cent rise in the manufacturing index.
Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the higher exports volume in February, which grew 17.6 per cent, had also translated into a continued positive print in IPI growth.
European Semiconductor Market Grew 6.8% in February YoY
European semiconductor sales in February 2021 reached US$ 3.482 billion, an increase of 6.8% versus the same month one year ago, the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) reported on 5 April based on World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) data. On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in February 2021 were US$ 39.588 billion, up 14.7% versus the same month in 2020. All growth figures represent a three-month rolling average.
Sensors, discretes and MOS microcomponents were the top drivers of February sales in Europe. Sales for these product categories grew by 4.2%, 3.9%, and 2.7 % respectively. Looking at worldwide sales of application-specific semiconductors, good growth was recorded for automotive infotainment chips, consumer and communication.
Global Semiconductor Sales Up 14.7% Year-to-Year in February
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) today announced global semiconductor industry sales were $39.6 billion for the month of February 2021, an increase of 14.7% over the February 2020 total of $34.5 billion, but 1.0% less than the January 2021 total of $40.0 billion. Monthly sales are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average. SIA represents 98% of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms.
“Global semiconductor sales during the first two months of the year have outpaced sales from early in 2020, when the pandemic began to spread in parts of the world,” said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO. “Sales into the China market saw the largest year-to-year growth, largely because sales there were down substantially early last ye
