Container xChange undercover survey: Forwarders failing to tap latent shipper-owned container capacity to tackle shortages

Container xChange undercover survey: Forwarders failing to tap latent shipper-owned container capacity to tackle shortages Mystery Shopper’ undercover survey of the world’s 50 largest freight forwarders finds acceptance of Shipper Owned Containers (SOC) is improving, but remains a rarity despite container shortages Just 10% of forwarders surveyed could source an SOC and organise the shipment from China to Europe, finds latest Container xChange report Commenting on the results, logistics guru Wolfgang Lehmacher says greater use of SOCs can “empower” forwarders and NVOCCs, and reduce container shortages, shipping costs and risk Supply chain logjams and box shortages could be reduced if forwarders were more willing to accept shipper-owned container (SOC) moves, according to Container xChange’s 2021 ‘Mystery Shopper’ survey of the freight forwarding market.

Only 10% of forwarders could source an SOC container

Alexander Kliem - Pixabay With container lines experiencing a severe shortage of containers a “mystery shopper” survey of major freight forwarders by Container xChange found only 10% could source shipper owned containers (SOC) rather than accepting carrier owned container (COC) shipments. In the undercover survey Container xChange sourced quotes from 50 forwarders for a shipment of industrial coffee machinery parts from China to Germany, with 45 days storage in the container and the use of an SOC box. The survey found that while 12 forwarders accepted the booking only five, or 10%, could actually move and source an SOC container. Of the remaining 12 forwarders that accepted booking two offered to buy the container on behalf of the shipper, and five others suggested that the company supply its own container.
