Algiers, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Mar, 2021 ) :Prosecutors in Algeria are seeking an 18-month prison sentence for a journalist on charges including defamation, a penalty Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has slammed as disproportionate .
The communications ministry has accused Abdelhakim Setouane, editor-in-chief of Arabic-language newssite Essafir Broadcast, of defamation , invasion of privacy , journalistic blackmail and publishing malicious information .
The accusations stem from an article alleging the speaker of the lower house of parliament was having an extra-marital affair, the media rights group said Monday.
The court in Sidi M hamed on Monday sought 18 months in jail for Setouane, who has been in custody since October 20.

Algeria threatens to withdraw France 24’s media accreditation

Algerian authorities on March 13 threatened to withdraw for good the media accreditation of international television broadcaster France 24, alleging “blatant bias” in its coverage of the country’s pro-democracy protest movement.
“A final warning before the permanent withdrawal of accreditation was sent to France 24,” a ministry statement said.
“The bias of France 24 in the coverage of the Friday [March 12] marches is blatant, going so far as to resort, without restraint, to archival images . . . to help anti-national remnants consisting of reactionary or separatist organisations,” the communications ministry alleged.
The Centre will allow residents to fill columns in the National Population Register (NPR) forms on their own through online mode, a month before door-to-door enumeration by Census officials starts. After filling the form online, residents will get a reference code that they could mention to the field enumerator at the time of her/his visit, according to a senior government official.
The group of 23 letter writers (G-23), who had written to party chief Sonia Gandhi last August asking for reforms, were not dissenters but protectors of the Congress legacy, senior Congress leader and a key member of G-23, Kapil Sibal, said on Sunday.
