New Delhi (CNN Business)Tax authorities in India raided several offices of one of the world s biggest-selling newspapers on Thursday, a move journalists and leading opposition politicians described
as an attack on press freedom.
The newspaper, Dainik Bhaskar, said that tax inspectors visited its offices in the capital New Delhi and the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in the early morning.
The paper shocked India with its reporting of dead bodies in the river Ganges during the brutal second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic this spring. It criticized authorities for under-reporting Covid-19 deaths and challenged state officials and the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over their handling of the crisis.

On April 16 this year, the front page of the
Dainik Bhaskar newspaper, the largest circulated daily in the country, carried a haunting image that would define India’s deadly second wave of COVID-19. It was a photograph of multiple burning pyres in the city of Bhopal.
On May 14,
Dainik Bhaskar published another haunting photo, This one showed corpses floating in the river Ganga, and the headline said ‘Ganga is ashamed’. The story said some 2000 bodies could be found.
Throughout the pandemic’s second wave, the media group did some of the most hard hitting stories on the COVID-19 crisis, from lack of oxygen in hospitals to the under reporting of the dead. The group called on president Akufo-Addo to defend media rights and freedoms
Mr Siapha Kamara, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SEND GHANA, a subsidiary of SEND Foundation of West Africa, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to create safe environment for journalists to practice without intimidation.
He said the President must honour his pledge to “defend the right of the media to free expression and promote accountable governance” adding that “if our democracy must advance, freedom and independence of the media must be guaranteed as enshrined in the 1992 constitution”.
Mr Kamara said this in a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) calling for prompt investigation into alleged verbal abuse on Erastus Asare Donkor, a Multimedia Group journalist.
