Journalists and a press safety advocate urged news consumers to be more skeptical and discerning of the news they read and hear amid an onslaught of disinformation and unreliable social media content.
They said the challenges for news consumers are compounded when trying to understand what is happening in war-torn nations like Syria, where independent journalism is scarce, journalists are at risk, and there is an abundance of untrustworthy propaganda.

World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2021, had as its theme,
“Information as a Public Good.” According to the United Nations General Assembly, the purpose of observing the day each year, is to serve as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and to be a time for reflection amongst media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

The theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day, “Information is a public good”, could not come at a more appropriate time.
It marked the signing of the historic 1991 Windhoek Declaration for the development of a free, independent and pluralistic press.
Article V of the document stated that “the worldwide trend towards democracy and freedom of information and expression is a fundamental contribution to the fulfilment of human aspirations”.
Like the oxygen we breathe, information received and disseminated by the media for consumption by the public, is inherently non-exclusive to anyone. But together, we can use this information to make important choices that can better our lives.
