This start-up has developed a way for businesses to quickly compost food waste

Maeko’s process creates usable compost within 24 hours. But food waste is a global problem. A new report from the United Nations has found that across the world almost 1 billion tonnes of food waste are generated a year – nearly twice the amount previously estimated. Twenty-six percent of this comes from food service and 13% from retail, but 61% comes from households – with an average of 74 kilogrammes of food being discarded per person each year around the world. The UN says the per-capita food wasted each year is “remarkably similar” from lower-middle-income to high-income countries.

The letter, organized and published by We Mean Business and Ceres, encourages the Biden administration to formally adopt an emissions reduction target that will cut GHG emissions by at least 50% below 2005 levels by 2030, and to “place the country on a credible pathway to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.” The Biden administration is expected to announce its “nationally determined contribution” (NDC), pursuant to the Paris Agreement, prior to the Leaders Summit on Climate it is hosting April 22-23.
