News comment: UNHCR welcomes new asylum law in Chad Format Sudanese refugees sit beside their makeshift shelter in Hilouta, Chad, January 2020. © UNHCR/Aristophane Ngargoune This news comment is attributable to Millicent Mutuli, Director of the UNHCR Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, commends The Republic of Chad for adopting its first-ever asylum law, which will enhance protection for the nearly 480,000 refugees currently hosted in the country. Adopted 23 December 2020, the law ensures refugees and asylum-seekers fundamental protections, including freedom of movement, the right to work and access to healthcare, education, and justice. The passage of this law makes Chad one of the first countries in the region to fulfill a pledge made during last year’s Global Refugee Forum in Geneva to strengthen legal, physical and material protection of refugees and asylum seekers.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – 70th anniversary (14 Dec. 2020) Share Today is the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution establishing the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). While the movement of populations forced to flee their countries has reached a record high, France takes this opportunity to commend the work of the UNHCR. Its action is all the more essential given that the Covid-19 pandemic particularly affects refugees and displaced persons. France reaffirms its commitment to supporting the work of the UNHCR, both by implementing the commitments it made at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva in December 2019 as well as through its financial contributions to the UNHCR.
