Yesterday was Human Rights Day and tomorrow is Universal Health Coverage Day. These two days coming so close together, at the end of this very difficult year, are a reminder that as we rebuild from this crisis, we must do so on the foundation of human rights – including the right to health.
COVID-19 has triggered a deep global economic crisis that could have a long-lasting impact on health financing. The COVID-19 crisis provides an opportunity for a ‘reset’ in countries with weak health financing systems.
Prolonged school closures are presenting an unprecedented challenge to children’s education, health and well-being. Today WHO has released a new checklist to support schools in re-opening and in preparing for resurgences of COVID-19 and similar public health crises.

More than 2,000 delegates from over 100 countries are to convene on Friday for a summit marking the Universal Health Coverage Day 2020, with Daily Trust taking part.
The summit on Friday, themed Lives in the Balance, is to elicit commitments by global leaders to improve the health of women, children and adolescents through Universal Health Coverage.
It will take stock of how the COVID-19 has affected progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), launch new commitments towards improving the health of women, children and adolescents, and galvanize a participatory approach from all stakeholders to ensure we can ‘do better’ during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Universal Health Day (also known as Universal Health Coverage Day – UHC Day) is celebrated on December 12
th every year, and is the annual rallying point for the growing movement for Universal Health to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to quality health services, when and where they need them, without exposing them to financial hardship.
The Region of the Americas has joined the global campaign every year, highlighting specific areas of interest for the Region. This year, the central theme of ‘Health for All: Protect Everyone” will be recognized through a webinar that will convene PAHO Member States, Academic Institutions, Civil Society and other relevant stakeholders around the critical importance of the Essential Public Health Functions.
