The #EndSARS protests in October 2020 captured the state of the nation when defenceless youths on a peaceful protest on Lekki Tollgate were allegedly mowed down with flags in their hands and the national anthem on their lips for daring to demand a better Nigeria. For many, that day was Nigeria’s darkest hour but for a government that is not used to being held accountable, the killings never happened. Although the protests were primarily directed at the abolition of SARS and the end of police brutality, the demonstrations were essentially a cry for a better and prosperous Nigeria. The protests simply echoed the frustration of long-suffering Nigerians, tired of the injustice and inequality in society, tired of the worsening state of insecurity in the country, tired of corruption, and tired of an economy seemingly in reverse because of the incompetence of political leadership that has had their knees on the neck of the people

At the current rate at which the nation is spiraling, it is hard to conclude that Nigeria will remain intact till the end of the 21st century, which is another 80 years from now. This is very optimistic.
Why do I say this? I grew up during the colonial days and our teachers in Emmanuel Primary School, Ado-Ekiti, the only educational institution I ever attended, taught us about the sanctity of life. To drive their point home, they taught us such poems as “Yi ese re siapakan, ma se pa kokoroni. Kokoroti o konaanini, Olorun lo le da”; meaning: “Don’t kill that insect which only God and no man can create”. If we were forbidden from killing a mere insect then, how come then that wanton killing on the farm, on the streets, in the classrooms and in hotel rooms has become the order of the day?

Implementing the open grazing ban

Since the Governors of the 17 states of Southern Nigeria banned open grazing of livestock in their respective states, there has been a groundswell of support.
Members of the National Assembly as well as the Speakers of the State Assemblies from three geopolitical zones have also thrown their support. The implication is that the elected political class has converged on the same page with the leaders of thought and the general public on this issue. The question is: what next?
The Governors intend to meet President Muhammadu Buhari when he returns from his official trip to France. The obvious intention is to ask him to roll out the armed forces, police and the military in support of the implementation of the open grazing ban. Judging from the regime’s attitude to this issue, this expectation needs to be re-assessed.
