Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 as their new law enforcement handgun of choice. The move marks more than a century of arming the city’s officers with S&W firearms. Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc announced the decision Dec. 15, 2020. But Springfield’s finest first started carrying S&W guns back in 1899. It is a fitting tribute for a company that has claimed the Springfield as its home since 1856. “We’re very appreciative of the entire team at Smith & Wesson,” said Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood. “They have the best and safest products on the market. Their company being based in our city and many of their employees living in Springfield has led to a long-term partnership that our officers take pride in.”
