Continues General Debate on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
The Human Rights Council this morning began its annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child with a panel discussion on the rights of the child and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In her opening statement, Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said it was clear that realizing the rights of children was a requisite to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. However, discrimination, inequality, lack of political will, inadequate investment and other barriers meant children’s rights often remained a wish rather than a reality.

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights today opened its remote sixty-ninth session, hearing opening remarks by Peggy Hicks, Director of the Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Renato Zerbini Ribeiro Leão, Chair of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, in his opening remarks, said he was glad the Committee was able to continue its work despite the pandemic.
Ms. Hicks said COVID-19 had revealed and exacerbated existing social and economic inequalities. The work of the Committee was all the more critical than ever to ensure that economic, social and cultural rights were protected in the pandemic response and recovery process.
