JSCN Chief Wally Burns told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix this month that he was in talks to buy millions of doses of the AstraZeneca/University of Oxford vaccine by way of an American broker.
Burns said treaty rights requiring the Crown to assist in times of pestilence or sickness meant the federal government should pay for those doses if they are available. The FSIN twice asked Indigenous Services Canada to fund the private purchase of vaccine in February, reportedly at a price of US$21 million.
Federal officials have since raised red flags about the safety and legitimacy of such deals. Miller said last week that ISC contacted law enforcement on the matter. ISC said it was working to identify “unsolicited offers of COVID-19 vaccine for sale to Indigenous communities that are deemed suspicious.”
